CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Career Education cutting 149 jobs

Schaumburg-based Career Education is cutting 149 Illinois jobs as the higher education company shuts down its campuses.
The cuts at Career Education are among 852 layoffs reported last month to the Illinois Department of Labor as part of the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. They were made public Wednesday.
Career Education's layoffs are expected between July 6 and July 19, the company said in a filing with the state.
The layoffs, which are primarily in Schaumburg, "are part of the announcement made last month that the company would be focusing its future attention and efforts on its two predominantly online universities — American InterContinental University and Colorado Technical University," spokesman Mark Spencer said.
The company is shutting its 14 remaining Sanford-Brown campuses, which offer several health-related programs across the country, amid a government crackdown on for-profit colleges that leave students with useless degrees and a lot of debt. Many campuses will remain open for 18 months or more as students complete their courses, a spokesman said.
